Maxie and Archie are mirror images.

In many ways, Maxie and Archie are direct opposites, mirroring and complimenting each other.

For example, beyond their goals; Maxie is overly formal and distant, even paranoid at times, despite his goal for humanity. Archie is rather close to his team, and appears more casual and friendly. This can be read as directly correlated to their goals; Maxie wants to benefit the world as a whole, and as stated in his promo site description, he tends to value the whole of the situation despite minor loss. He would see loss of individuality as an unfortunate but inevitable factor, as long as humanity as a whole can function. Sacrificing even his own individuality and friendships for the world. Archie values nature and, by his friendly nature towards his teammates and the sea, those people and pokemon valuable to him. Loss on a grand scale is fine, as long as the sea he values can go on. Sacrificing the world for a loved one is more his thing.

That being said, I'd like to interpet/give my two cents on Archie's promo description. It states him as a "dangerous figure," but I find this an inaccurate statment. The promo statments are insightful, but not absolute; in Maxie's case, it states he uses numerical terms often, but he only ever does so in the Battle Maison when you multi-battle with him. In Archie's case, I believe he is willing to die for his cause, but far from apathetic to it. He understands it's tragic and wants to avoid it, but isn't unwilling to. He clearly cares about his teammates, so I don't imagine this early vision was exactly final. Similar sentiments were stated back in the anime guidebook (journeys updated edition), with his RSE version, so I imagine it was a leftover from his RSE personality. I'm mainly talking about ORAS.

Another way they directly act as each other's foils, is their attitudes on each other. Maxie appears distant and formal, so it's easy for fanon to misinterpret that as hatred or uncaring. He is far from such. We all know about the infamous model boat, well-cared for, and "I know his feelings are real." He clearly, in some form, cares for and even looks out for Archie's wellbeing; his goal is for the good of humanity, he wants the best for everyone, and Archie is no exception. Meanwhile, Archie is rather friendly, so it goes without saying he also keeps Maxie in mind often. Although, if we think about it, most of these moments come from Maxie. Maxie owns the model boat, and states that idea. This does not insinuate Archie doesn't care for Maxie; simply that he's more independent of Maxie than his friendly demeanor would let on, versus how Maxie tries to appear or just appears highly independent of Archie, but is a lot more dependent and considerate of him than he lets on. They both clearly care about each other deeply, and that care mirrors in different forms of showing it (dependancy/independence), and that's hidden by the opposite trait in stress and argument.
